John Ness Beck (1930-1987) was an American composer and conductor who specialized in sacred choral music. He studied music at Texas Christian University and the University of Southern California, and later served as Director of Music at All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, California.
Beck composed hundreds of works for choir, including anthems, hymns, and cantatas, as well as instrumental music and operas. Many of his compositions are characterized by rich harmonies and intricate counterpoint, and draw upon a diverse range of musical styles and traditions.
In addition to his work as a composer, Beck was a respected conductor and music educator. He led numerous choral groups, including the Southern California Mormon Choir and the Los Angeles Oratorio Society, and served as a faculty member at several universities and music schools.
Beck received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to choral music, including the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Award for Five Decades of Excellence in Sacred Music. Today, his music continues to be performed and recorded by choirs around the world.
